Traditional landscapes

Timeless scenes capturing the beauty of the British countryside, coastal views, and moorland vistas.

Old Mill - Original oil painting depicting an old water mill in the countryside, set against a backdrop of snow topped mountains, with a river running alongside.

Inspiration meets artistry

Unlike his private abstract work, John’s landscape process is wonderfully open, he often paints on location where rolling hills and dramatic skies can emerge on the canvas through careful layering of light and shadow, bringing each scene to life.

What are your sources of inspiration for the scenes you paint and can we visit any of the locations?

Some scenes are based on specific locations, but most are from the artist’s imagination. Locations of popular scenes include Pendle Hill (view from the village of Barley), Wycoller (pack-horse bridge), Wuthering Heights (Top Withens) which can be reached by following the footpath across the moor from Stanbury, near Haworth. Now only the ruins of the original farmhouse remain, thought to have inspired Emily Bronte’s classic novel. Cornish scenes include Mevagissey harbour and Polmassic village.
